Opportunities Available

Work experience in the NHS can support students to build their knowledge in:

  • Clinical roles – What it is like to work within the healthcare team in roles such as nursing, midwifery, allied health professions etc.
  • Medical roles – What it is like to work within the healthcare team in roles such as doctor, GP, Physician Associates etc.
  • Non-Clinical roles – What it is like to work as part of the healthcare team that supports the work of the wider NHS in roles such as administration, finance, human resources, catering or estates and facilities etc.

In clinical and medical placements, work experience usually takes the form of observation or shadowing and there is no opportunity to participate in any clinical activities such as taking blood pressure.

Those aged 16 and over will have greater access to clinical and medical placements such as being based on a ward, however this is at the discretion of the departmental lead and is not guaranteed.
