Doctors

Doctors support service users to live their lives as fully as possible by diagnosing and treating illnesses. There are many different disciplines of medicine which provide multiple career development opportunities depending on your skills and interests.

Doctors work alongside multidisciplinary clinical and non-clinical teams across a variety of settings to support patients to help people recover from illness, change patients’ lives and even save lives.

To be employed as a Doctor you will need to demonstrate a good standard of literacy and numeracy and for all roles, employers will ask for GCSE’s or equivalent in maths and English along with strong A Levels in the sciences and then a Degree in Medicine from University. Digital skills and qualifications are also highly sought after and very useful in addition to your medical degree as many NHS and Social Care settings rely on IT based systems to manage their databases and patient information.

Working for the NHS or for Social Care in Mid and South Essex provides many opportunities to develop your skills further and there are a wide range of apprenticeships, in-house training and continuing professional development opportunities available that you can use to build your career.

There are opportunities to develop your career within Medicine by taking on additional responsibilities where you could become a consultant, supervisor or a manager.

Becoming a Doctor will mean that you have lots of face-to-face contact with patients and other healthcare professionals and once qualified, you are able to gain professional registration to be able to practice.
