Success for Widening Access Demonstrator Programme in Mid and South Essex

From cars to care 🏥

Elizabeth’s journey into the NHS began after speaking to Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust’s Anchor team… and so could yours!

After becoming redundant following more than 30 years working in car sales, Elizabeth wasn’t sure where to turn. During a visit to her local library she spoke to the Anchor team about the Widening Access Demonstrator Scheme.

The Widening Access Demonstrator Scheme is an NHS England initiative designed to tackle workforce shortages and improve social mobility by helping people from underrepresented communities enter jobs in health and social care.

In Mid and South Essex, the programme is being run collaboratively between Mid and South Essex Integrated Care Board and Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust’s Anchor Team.

Kevin Garrod, Local Value Lead said: “It is very important, as health and social care providers, that we offer local work opportunities.

“We know good health is affected by a wide range of things, and being able to work and earn is one of those.”

The Anchor team helped Elizabeth find a training placement at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust who then supported her through her application and appointment as Booking Clerk at Southend Hospital.

Kevin adds: “We want to help more people like Elizabeth find employment in the NHS and would encourage local people to get in touch.”
