The Greater Essex Careers Hub has recently published a new case study celebrating an exciting development in early careers engagement: the Immersive Healthcare Careers Workshop, an innovative alternative work‑experience pilot led by the NHS Essex Health & Care Academy team.
Designed for younger students who are not yet eligible for traditional work‑experience placements, the workshop offers a hands‑on, meaningful introduction to real healthcare careers. Through interactive activities, practical simulations, and direct engagement with NHS staff, students gain an authentic insight into the skills, environments, and values that shape modern healthcare.
A Co‑Designed Approach That Works
The case study highlights how the programme was built collaboratively and how the NHS Essex Health & Care Academy, ensured that the workshop reflects both the needs of local employers and the aspirations of young people exploring future pathways. Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive for the new initiative with students reporting that they feel more confident, more informed, and more inspired about pursuing roles within the NHS.
Staff involved in the pilot praised the workshop’s structure, realism, and ability to spark genuine curiosity.
Kate Green, NHS Essex Health & Care Academy Manager said “Thanks to our collaboration with the Greater Essex Careers Hub, the NHS Essex Health & Care Academy team were able to welcome a fantastic group of young people to our Education and Training Simulation Suite for this session. They brought such energy and enthusiasm to every activity and were an absolute pleasure to host. It’s wonderful to hear that some are now considering a future career in the NHS, and the Academy team are excited at the prospect of supporting them further as they continue their exploration journey through our Skills Lab sessions.”
Recognition for Innovation in Early Careers Engagement
The feature on the Greater Essex Careers Hub website marks an important milestone for the NHS Essex Health & Care Academy recognising the value of creative, accessible, and inclusive early‑engagement models, especially for students who may otherwise have limited exposure to healthcare environments.
